What things cost, and what makes them cost more

We would rather you knew the rough number now than after a man in a van has come out and made you feel awkward about it.

Always included, never itemised

  • Moving and covering your furniture, and putting it back
  • Filling nail holes, cracks and dents, and sanding them flat
  • Caulking gaps at baseboards, trim and ceiling line
  • Masking, drop cloths and floor protection
  • Two full coats, cut in by hand at every edge
  • A proper clean-up, including the bits of tape
  • A walk-round with you before we leave

What pushes a price up

Ceilings over nine feet, because everything needs a tower.

Dark colors over white, or white over dark. That is a third coat.

Old wallpaper that was painted over. It has to come off, and the wall underneath is usually a mess.

Woodwork that has never been stripped. Ten layers of gloss does not sand flat in an afternoon.

Plaster that moves when you press it. We will show you, and we will not paint over it and pretend.

Exterior

Always quoted on the day. Two houses the same size can be a week apart, depending on what the weather has done to the wood.

For a rough idea: a typical three-bedroom in Monroeville, windows, doors, fascia and soffit, runs $2,400 to $4,200. We do not paint over rot, and we will show you where it is before we quote.

Questions we get asked

Do I pay anything before you start?

No deposit on jobs under $2,000. Above that we ask for a third when we start, and the rest when you are happy at the end.

What if it costs more than you quoted?

Then it costs what we quoted. The only things that change the price are you asking for something different, or us finding something behind a wall we could not have seen. We stop and talk to you before touching it.

Can I supply my own paint?

Yes, and plenty of people do. We will tell you straight whether what you bought is right for the job before we open it.

How long does a room take?

A bedroom is about a day and a half, most of it preparation. Hall, stairs and landing is three to four days because of the access.

Do you work weekends?

Saturdays yes, Sundays no. We would rather come back Monday than rush the last coat.

Want it priced properly?

Twenty minutes at your house, no charge, and a written number the same evening.
